Quando um filhote nasce, cabe aos pais, geralmente a mãe, dar-lhes seus nomes.[1] O nome de um filhote é geralmente o diminutivo de seu sufixo, mas também pode ser o próprio sufixo sem o diminutivo ou Filhote de — [2][3] Um aprendiz geralmente tem o prefixo Pata de —,[4] portanto há exceções.[5] Um guerreiro, entretanto, tem um prefixo totalmente diferente, às vezes relacionado com sua aparência, personalidade,[6] ou até mesmo com significado à outro personagem.[7][8] Também houve momentos em que um personagem ganhou seu nome com base em uma conquista,[9] uma descoberta de grande importância[10] ou suas ações em batalha.[11] Raramente um gato mudará de nome se seus pais ou eles próprios acharem que não lhes convém mais.[12] Um líder, no entanto, assume "Estrela" como o prefixo de seu nome, para significar sua conexão com o Clã das Estrelas e também sua posição como líder.[13]
